Baithak - 1 : Published Report

Cross-National Youth Dialogue - 1 The term "Baithak" (बैठक), originating from South Asian traditions, denotes a space for deliberation, intellectual exchange, and collective decision-making. Historically, ‘Baithak’ has served as a forum for discourse across artistic, philosophical, and political domains. This concept is paralleled by similar traditions in other cultures. "Kothu Sala" (ක ෝතු ශාලා) in Sri Lanka, influenced by Buddhist monastic debates, emphasizes rigorous ethical and intellectual dialogue. The "Majlis" ( مجلس (in the Middle East has periodically functioned as a consultative space shaping political and religious discourse. Furthermore, the Greek Agora (ἀγορά), a cradle of democratic debate, and Indigenous Talking Circles in North and Latin America, which prioritize consensus-driven decision-making, reflect this deliberative ethos. In India, Sabhas and Panchayats consequentially functioned as decentralized governance structures, fostering public participation and underscoring the role of open dialogue in policymaking. The selection of "Baithak" for this Climate Dialogue intentionally invokes these historical traditions of collective knowledge production and intergenerational dialogue.
